Arsenal vs. Coventry City kicks off at 20:00 [GMT+1] on Friday, August 21, at the Emirates. Premier League champions Arsenal will begin their title defence against newly promoted Coventry City, with the opening fixture bringing the Sky Blues back to the top-flight after an absence of more than 25 years. The curtain-raiser to the season ended in a 3-0 win for the Gunners over Manchester City in the FA Community Shield. Meanwhile, both sides have met on the opening day of a league season only once before, and that encounter produced a memorable Coventry victory. Arsenal enter the new campaign with an impressive opening-day record. They have won their first Premier League fixture in each of the previous four seasons, with their last opening defeat coming 2-0 against Brentford in 2021-22. Victory here would make it five consecutive opening-day wins, something Arsenal have achieved only once previously in their league history, between 2001-02 and 2005-06. Arsenal have previously started three Premier League campaigns as reigning champions and won on every occasion, including victories over promoted Nottingham Forest in 1998-99 and Birmingham City in 2002-03. Their record against newly promoted opposition further underlines the scale of Coventry's challenge. Since the beginning of 2023-24, Arsenal have won 17 of their 18 Premier League matches against promoted teams, with a 2-2 draw against Sunderland last season the only exception. At home, they are unbeaten in a competition-record 45 consecutive league games against promoted clubs, winning 40 and drawing five. A 4—3—3 formation with Madueke, Kai Havertz, and Christos Tzolis, who bagged a brace of assists against City, may be seen again against Coventry City.

For Coventry, this fixture marks their first Premier League appearance since the 2000-01 campaign. Their absence of 25 years and 94 days represents the longest gap between matches for any club in Premier League history. They have also failed to win their opening league match in each of the last four seasons, recording two draws and two defeats since beating Nottingham Forest in 2021-22. Since a league double over Arsenal in the 1993-94 season, Coventry have won only one of their following 14 top-flight meetings with Arsenal, drawing five and losing eight. That solitary victory came in a 3-2 success on Boxing Day in 1999. In addition, the clubs have not met in the Premier League since February 2001, when Arsenal recorded a 1-0 victory at Highfield Road. Nevertheless, Frank Lampard’s side will be looking to get off to a flying start. Nigerian international Taiwo Awoniyi recently joined the newly promoted side and should be fit enough to lead the charge when they appear with a 4—2—3—1 setup.
