Le Mans FC vs Stade Brestois 29 kicks off at 19:45 [GMT+1] on Saturday, August 22, at Stade Marie-Marvingt. Le Mans will make their long-awaited return to France’s top flight when they welcome Brest, ending a 16-year absence. Les Mucistes’ promotion was finally confirmed after a dramatic conclusion to their Ligue 2 campaign. A 2-0 victory over Bastia on the final day was enough to secure their place in the top flight, although crowd trouble brought the match to an early end and meant the club had to wait another three days for the LFP to officially rubber-stamp their promotion. It represents a remarkable turnaround for a club that went bankrupt in 2013 and subsequently fell as low as the sixth tier of French football. Simply avoiding relegation would therefore be another major achievement for Patrick Videira’s side, who can take confidence from an outstanding home record. Le Mans are unbeaten in their last 15 home matches, winning eight and drawing seven [8W, 7D, 0L], and that resilience will be tested immediately in Videira’s first-ever Ligue 1 match as a manager. This will be the first meeting between the sides since 2005 and their first-ever encounter in Ligue 1. MUC 72 will be hoping to improve on a disappointing recent record against Brest, having collected just one point from their last four meetings, losing the other three [0W, 1D, 3L]. Defender Harold Voyer will serve a suspension carried over from last season. Dame Guèye and Antoine Rabillard are expected at the attacking end of a 3—1—4—2 setup against Les Pirates.

Brest, meanwhile, enter the campaign with Julien Lachuer looking to revive a team that finished last season without a victory in their final nine matches [0W, 3D, 6L]. His immediate priority will be to arrest a worrying decline in league finishes, with each of Les Ty’ Zefs’ last two campaigns ending lower than the previous one. There is at least some encouragement in the club’s managerial history, as none of their last five permanent bosses lost their first match in charge [1W, 4D, 0L]. However, Brest’s record in opening fixtures is far less convincing: they have won just one of their last 13 Ligue 1 season openers [1W, 6D, 6L]. Their August record also makes for uncomfortable reading, with only one victory from their last seven matches played during the month [1W, 1D, 5L]. Hugo Magnetti is a doubt for Les Pirates, while Brendan Chardonnet will miss the contest. A 4—2—3—1 formation with Ludovic Ajorque leading the attacking line may be seen against Le Mans.
